Hi! My name is Jazmin, and I am the owner and founder of Jazzy Desserts. I am a freshman in college who hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in hospitality administration and an associates degree in baking and pastry arts. I have started Jazzy Desserts to get a head start on my baking business that I hope to open after receiving an education, and to share my desserts with anyone who enjoys food as much as I do!
I have loved to cook for as long as I can remember (or whenever my mom deemed me old enough to use the kitchen, whichever came first). I would experiment with different things in the pantry, from pink lemonade to spicy soup that consisted of water and spices. I soon came to make actual, which consisted mostly of Bisquick pancakes and boxed cupcakes. By the age of eight, when I entered the fourth grade, I began participating in my school’s cooking club, where a chef came once a week to help us making something delicious from scratch. It was here I learned that making things from scratch really made a difference in the taste. From that point on, I decided I would always make my desserts from as many “scratch” ingredients as I could. This meant no more Bisquick and no more boxed cupcakes; but I was happy with the switch. I have found with much practice and a good recipe, homemade cupcakes and pancakes from scratch are just as simple, but taste infinitely better than the boxed brands.
Through my years in the cooking club, we learned to make some really great dishes, like gnocchi and spanakopita, but I began to lean toward the desserts, as I was fascinated with the fact that you can mix all these different things together, add some heat, and you get something totally different than any of the ingredients that you put in. It was like some crazy science experiment! I continued to pursue different desserts, diving into different types of cakes, pies, cookies, pastries, and even ice cream. I wanted to challenge myself to make more difficult desserts that involved meringues, laminated doughs, and custards, making more elegant desserts like angel food cake, croissants, and gelato. I read more and more, wanting to learn as much as I could from reading and practicing as I could, and always begging my mom to let me get another recipe book from the bookstore whenever she received a gift card. I continued to grow my repertoire, and am still seeking new types of desserts to make to add to my list.
When I entered high school, I realized I needed to get my desserts out to people, and make my baking known. I began baking for school projects, school events, family, friends, even my dad’s barber, to begin to get my name out there. However, it wasn’t anything official yet, just a friend baking for a friend, or student baking for a class. As more an more requests came in, my family and I began to speculate about a name and a label, and maybe creating a business out of this. After mentioning this to a family friend, she asked “how about ‘Jazzy Desserts?'” I took to the name, and here we are! Jazzy Desserts is born.
I am currently a home processor and am looking to sell at local farmers markets, flea markets, and other places the like in my area.
